History of House of Marbles

Back in 1973, we produced wooden game boards from a warehouse based in Chudleigh (a quaint Devonshire village) for several years. With increasing sales and an ever-growing business, we faced new challenges due to the popularity of our handcrafted products. One of our original products, the wooden marble solitaire board, was in such demand that we needed to source more marbles (each set has 33 marbles). Not the most significant issue by today’s standards, but who would want to buy a marble solitaire board when the main component parts were scarcely available? Realising a gap in the market and presenting a solution for this adverse situation, the decision was made. It was time to start making marbles! In 1981 we created a glassworks studio to fulfil this need, and so, out of a relatively minor (but rather essential) issue, two companies emerged from the figurative flames: House of Marbles and Teign Valley Glass.

Although Teign Valley Glass was first set up to make specialist handmade marbles for board games, the team had the skills and glass-creating knowledge to make more than just that. As Teign Valley Glass developed and grew, it became a separate business enterprise and glass-making studio you will find today. You can visit us in Bovey Tracey, Devon, where we are now based (in The Old Pottery heritage buildings) and see our glassblowers and sculptors live in action. You will also be able to view their current glassware collection, including vases, sculptures and figurines, to name a few types.
